Because I’m exactly the kind of sad enough person to do this, I went and checked how closely the Division Four of this sketch (from 1986) resembles the League Two of today.
Only five of the teams featured (Mansfield, Southend, Hartlepool, Northampton and Tranmere) still ply their trade at the same level; while three clubs (Chester City, Aldershot and Hereford United) no longer exist – although the former two have been replaced by new outfits.
By dint of making it as far as the Premier League, Burnley are the side who’ve moved furthest away, although before being wound up Hereford had dropped to the Southern Premier League (three levels below League 2). The lowest still-existing team in the list is Stockport County, who are now in the Conference North (tier six).
Your life is just hugely enriched by this knowledge, isn’t it?
