Wednesday Comics: Roy of the Rovers at USA ’94 (Part 1)

As part of a series of posts we’ll be doing this summer looking back at the 1994 World Cup twenty years on, here’s the first part of the USA ’94 storyline from Roy of the Rovers Monthly. Arguably one of the best storylines the monthly comic did, the strip sees Rocky and his best mate Paul “Delroy” Ntende travelling to the States to watch the tournament – only for Del to be drafted into the Nigerian squad following an unforeseen tragedy. Meanwhile, back in Melchester, a hostile takeover bid from within the board of directors threatens to destabilise the club, and the existing chairman knows that the only person who can save the Rovers might be the original Roy Race himself.

Strips come from a combination of ROTR Monthly and Shoot magazine, and are scripted by Stuart Green, with art from Geri Ford, Rob Davis and Sean Longcroft. Parts two and three to follow over the next two weeks.

Great stuff. I definitely had the monthly, but don’t think I was buying Shoot! around this time, so some of this is completely fresh.

You can see how the art-work and feel would put of some who were attached to the weekly, my Dad for one, but it has a great look all of it’s own. It’s a shame Glory! Glory! never came to fruition.
